There was high drama at the Gem City complex in Phoenix on Sunday night when armed robbers fired when they were fleeing the robbery scene.

It is alleged by the manager at the Tattersalls that on Sunday, 6 October 2019, at approximately18H45 he was in his office rounding up cash when he heard a knock on the office door.

“The workers came in and he realized that there were two unknown African males armed with firearms who forced the workers into his office. The suspects took R50 000 from the table.  They demanded the safe keys and took an amount of R43 000.  A further amount of R32 000 for payouts was also taken”, said the Communications Officer at the Phoenix SAPS, Captain Louise Naidoo.

She stated that the suspects had hats on.  As the suspects were escaping, they came across the security guard from RUSA who came to guard the same premises as they were closing.

“There was an exchange of fire between the guard and the suspects. Two vehicles that were at the parking lot were damaged”, she explained.

The gunmen got into a black, new model Mercedes-Benz and sped off. Back-up RUSA Officers converged on the scene and conducted an extensive search for the robbers, however they still remain at large. Several spent 9mm and rifle cartridges were recovered at the scene.

It is believed that the suspects belong to a gang that have targeted several tattersalls in recent months.
