International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on 8 March yearly. It recognizes the contributions of women in society while it also helps to put into focus some of the issues women face on a daily basis in a largely patriarchal society.

The International Women’s Day meeting on Saturday, 9 March at Manav Dharam. South Africa was synonymous with the spirit of this celebration.

The theme of the day was “Balance is Better”, focusing on ways in which a woman should also spend some of her time and thoughts on things that improve the quality of her own life - both in the long and short term - in addition to all her other daily activities.  It is well known that with the various roles women play in society - as children, mothers, daughters, sisters, employees and community leaders - they often neglect themselves, their bodies, minds and futures.

The meeting began with a warm welcome from Dr C Koobair, who then also gave a talk entitled “A Balanced Life for Healthy Ageing” , which centred around the importance of women giving back to themselves, spending time for themselves, so that they can grow older gracefully, actively, healthily and happily. She put emphasis on healthy eating, exercise, meditation and daily gratitude for all that we have and all that we are.

Sadhna Singh Hamchander, Heal your Life coach, practitioner and facilitator then delivered a talk about “Patterns and Pain”, which underlined how it is each individual that is actually entirely responsible for her own thoughts, emotions and actions, rather than the circumstances and people around her, like we all often believe.  She provided tools on how to take better control of these aspects our lives, and be happier.

Ishara Baijnath, who is a qualified attorney, then spoke about the importance of women spending time to think ahead for themselves as well, and not wait for others to do it for her. She took the group through everything they needed to know about wills and testaments - why they are important, how to draw them up etc.

Mahatma Suvidhya Baiji, who runs the South African branch of Manav Dharam, took the women through “Food for Soul and Body” in which she taught women how essential it is to practice daily meditation, and taught them everything they needed to know about how to do so.  She also demonstrated to the group how to cook a scrumptious and healthy dish called “Upma”.  Everyone in attendance was given the opportunity to sample the food afterwards.

The last item on the program was a dance demonstration, to help the women loosen up while getting fit and having fun in the process.

The women were then given hampers and had a delicious high tea.  There were approximately 55 women in attendance.

Manav Dharam holds weekly yoga classes from 08H00-09H00 on Sundays at the ashram, followed by satsangs (discourses) from Mahatma Suvidhya Baiji on the Bhagavat Gita at 09H30.  On Tuesday from 09H00-10H00, there are basic meditation classes and Ramayan discourses.

On Thursday there are satsangs and bhajans from 18H30-20H00. There are also youth meetings and women’s meetings that take place once a month. Anyone wishing to join any of the classes are welcome.

Women are phenomenal, uplifing a women is uplifting a nation.
